What is Vermiculture?

​What in the world?  We would like to introduce you to vermiculture!  Welcome to the wonderful world of worms.  If you are an avid gardener you are probably familiar with the many benefits that worms bring to your glorious green spaces.  But let's start at the beginning just in case you are new to this idea.  

• Worms can be raised to break down organic material in the composting process.  This process is called vermicomposting.  
• Worm guts hold many beneficial microbes to soil which are transferred into their doo-doo.  These are called castings.
• Castings can be steeped in water to produce compost tea.  Think of it as an energy drink for your plants and veggies. 

Why do I care?

Ok, here is the deal.  It is better for your plants than regular-ass fertilizer.  Let me count the ways...

• Castings and compost tea are natural fertilizers
• Will not "burn up" your plants like N-P-K fertilizers can
• Can prevent plant disease using fewer pesticides
• Amends and replenishes soil therefore increasing productivity
• Has been used for centuries by different cultures

Here you go.  

• This study, Vermicompost a Living Soil Amendment done by Cornell University shows that the hormones and enzymes that vermiculture  produce do in fact increase plant health.  
• This study shows how plants were bigger and healthier using worm castings-  Vermicompost on the production and quality of jalapeno peppers.
